Eighteen months into the AI boom, the hype has cooled. The novelty has worn off. So it’s fair to ask: does AI still earn a place in how leaders operate?
My answer, after auditing how leadership teams actually use it: yes — but only when it’s treated as a tool, not a crutch.
Here’s where AI still delivers real value for leaders:
- Decision speed. Being able to integrate market data, financial reports, and team feedback used to take days. But now, leaders can get a first-pass analysis in minutes, freeing time for judgment instead of data-gathering.
- Pressure-testing thinking. The best leaders I’ve seen use AI as a sparring partner — asking it to argue the counterpoint to their strategy before they commit to it. It doesn’t replace conviction; it stress-tests it.
- Communication at scale. Drafting the first version of a memo, a difficult message, or a town hall script no longer eats an afternoon. Leaders redirect that time toward the harder work: actually connecting with people.
- Pattern recognition. Spotting trends across sprawling data sets — attrition risk, customer churn signals, budget drift — is something AI does faster and more consistently than a human scanning spreadsheets.
Where it falls short — and where leaders get burned — is when it’s used as a substitute for judgment, accountability, or genuine relationship-building. AI can draft the layoff email. It cannot carry the weight of delivering it, or own the fallout. It can model scenarios. It cannot take responsibility when the bet doesn’t pay off.
The leaders getting the most value right now aren’t the ones using AI the most. They’re the ones who’ve drawn a clear line: AI handles velocity, humans handle judgment.
So — is AI still valuable for leadership? Absolutely. But the tool hasn’t changed nearly as much as the discipline required to use it well.
